In Afghanistan, decades of conflict and a shattered economy have created a complex humanitarian emergency. It's an inherent human need to seek higher ground, safety, opportunity - and to escape, however necessary, violence, poverty and war. We stand with the brave, uprooted people on the move across the globe and hope for more attention, support, and solutions for the ongoing crisis on a global scale. The Artivist Nest along with @sant.egidio is creating a small but powerful opportunity for 10 migrant youth during our first session, initially planned for June 2022 but now scheduled for June 2023 as we feel compelled to include people being relocated from Afghanistan. Sant'Egidio is working hard to help migrants by creating what they call 'humanitarian corridors', including escaping the Taliban regime. Please divert your help on this Giving Tuesday 2021 to them, or to organizations doing great work on the ground such as Unicef or Doctors Without Borders. The Artivist Nest considers three core goals for every session, each keeping us aligned with our overall mission of making a dent in our shared humanitarian crises. We work towards a micro goal, a macro goal, and ultimately towards the creation of awareness. The micro goal is the raising up of individuals who are victims of the very themes being treated; their participation is at the heart of the retreats. The macro goal is the assembling of experts who are tackling the issues individually in their fields, and who join us for the rare opportunity to work and live in tandem with their peers. The third goal is that of awareness, being raised by all who attend the retreat, and being spread to the public through the art and communication output coming from each session we curate. Afghanistan is experiencing a humanitarian crisis as violence and insecurity have brought more suffering and internal displacement for thousands of Afghans.Over half a million people have been internally displaced in 2021 alone – and the number of people forced to flee continues to rise.

This recent insecurity and displacement have prompted a humanitarian crisis for the Afghan people, who have already suffered more than 40 years of conflict, as well as increasing natural disasters, chronic poverty and food insecurity. The resilience of refugees, the internally displaced and host communities is being stretched to the absolute limit. Visit our website to join our mission! *linkinbio.

There is no doubt that many Afghan citizens will need protection in the weeks and months ahead. What remains shrouded in uncertainty, however, is the magnitude of need and where to offer that protection. From neighbors, mainly Iran and Pakistan, to Western countries that have played a role in Afghanistan for the past two decades, perspectives on the unfolding crisis will differ. But all face the same challenge: Offering humanitarian protection that shields those fleeing persecution while being sustainable for host societies. Sant Egidio, one of The Artivist Nest's principal partners for it's first retreat, works very effectively with the Italian government and several other local partners to create safe humanitarian corridors for thousands of refugees, and just managed to create a corridor for Afghani refugees. Integration of refugees is the focus of The Artivist Nests' Session 1. It is imperative that our Refugee Integration Session include the displaced Afghani population, together with the help of Sant'Egidio who we've teamed up for our first session. The organization is fighting to help the refugees flee the country and be legally accepted by the Italian government, as thousands of people are scrambling to flee the country after the Taliban seized back control of Afghanistan, almost two decades after they were ousted by a US-led coalition.

We love this portrait of Akhtar Babrek, 13, photographed by Associated Press photographer Muhammed Muheisen @mmuheisen who recently shot a series of portraits of Afghan children in a slum on the outskirts of Islamabad, Pakistan. Visit our website to join our mission! *linkinbio.

For much of his life, 22-year-old Farid Walizadeh has had to fight for survival. When he was just a year old, his father died and his mother, facing religious persecution in Afghanistan, was forced to flee to Pakistan, leaving her baby son behind with another family. After the death of his adoptive mother seven years later, his father paid smugglers to help him escape. The fee did not qualify Farid for a place on the donkey’s back, so he walked most of the way. "I went through things that not even most adults have ever experienced, let alone a child". Along the way, through the dry, cold mountains of Afghanistan, their numbers dwindled, he explained in a recent interview with the Reuters news agency. When they reached Pakistan, Farid "fell off" the back of a truck and continued alone to the Iranian-Turkish border. Finally, he reached Istanbul, ending up in an orphanage. Here, tormented by bullies, Farid began practicing kung-fu to channel his anger and defend himself. "I had no protection from the boys on the street or in school," he said. "They didn't like refugees". After five years in Istanbul, the UN Refugee Agency relocated Farid to Portugal, where he started martial arts again, this time trying boxing. Five months later, he had become the national cadet boxing champion and was awarded a human rights prize from Portugal's parliament. But as a refugee without Portuguese nationality, Farid’s career opportunities were limited. Once he turned 18, he began working nights in a hotel and studied during the day, hoping to achieve another of his goals in life: becoming an architect. It left him little time to train and compete. Bizimana Francois is a Rwandan refugee who had to flee the country during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. After arriving in Kenya with his mother and brothers, Francois looked for ways to make a living and in 2015 began selling “mandazi,” a snack of sweet fried bread, for a daily income of about 1000 Kenya shillings ($9.28 USD). With the support of REEP (Refugee Engagement and Empowerment Programme in Nairobi, Kenya), Francois has been able to develop his entrepreneurial skills and expand his production capacity to sell 21,000 Kenya shillings worth of mandazi a day. He has also moved his business to bigger premises, employed 2 young Kenyan refugees, and is currently working on turning his business into a cafe. Francois serves as a role model to many young refugees in the region. He is motivated, achieving, and proud of what he does in supporting himself and others using his small business. He is also a prize-winning singer. Visit our website to join our mission! *linkinbio.

Our first session : Refugee Integration : is planned for September 2022. We are tackling the ages old, yet ever current challenge of welcoming the world's displaced citizens into a better shared future. Our goal is to provide them with opportunities to lead independent and normal lives while enabling them to give back to their communities and make valuable contributions to the local economy as well as to rebuild their own futures. We are grateful for and grounded by our collaboration with Sant'Egidio - a charity based in Rome, doing great, consistent work with migrants reestablishing their lives in Italy. Stay tuned as the program comes together. Visit our website to join our mission! *linkinbio.

Eiad Zinah, 29, from Syria, is a school teacher in London.

He tells us his successful story of a fully integrated refugee:
"I grew up in Damascus in a middle class, moderate Muslim family. I graduated as a dentist in 2012, but I would have had to do military service under Assad’s regime, so I fled to Beirut, then to Egypt. I applied twice to go to Canada but got rejected, so in 2014 decided to go to Europe. From Alexandria, I paid a smuggler $2,000 (£1,370) and boarded a small boat with 400 other people. After seven days at sea, we were rescued by a Korean ship and two days later reached Italy.

In Paris, I was told not to go to the UK via Calais because they check the lorries, so I went to Brussels where I worked in a Syrian restaurant illegally to raise the $1,000 (£685) the smuggler wanted. I finally made it to Dover aboard a German lorry – four months after I had set out. In Dover, I was taken to a refugee centre full of people from all over the world. I was sent to Yorkshire in December 2014 and a few months later, got my asylum status, so I decided to move to London. For a month, I slept in churches and mosques, then I found a room in a house in Chiswick with 10 others.

I first felt at home when I started teaching about my country. Students are very involved; they ask lots of questions. My life in London was difficult, but at school I could forget how I feel. I am happy. I am teaching people about my country and the revolution – I am doing something important. I still dream about working as a dentist, but I need to pass two exams and each costs £3,000. I love Shepherd’s Bush because there are a lot of Syrian restaurants and shops there. Here people speak with Syrian accents. I am in London, but I am in Syria."

The integration of refugees is a dynamic and multifaceted two-way process which requires efforts by all parties concerned, including a preparedness on the part of refugees to adapt to the host society without having to forego their own cultural identity, and a corresponding readiness on the part of host communities and public institutions to welcome refugees and meet the needs of a diverse population. The process of integration is complex and gradual, comprising distinct but inter-related legal, economic, social and cultural dimensions, all of which are important for refugees’ ability to integrate successfully as fully included members of the host society -- UNHCR February 2018. Refugees are often overlooked and underutilized.
Recognizing this, companies have taken action through hiring, entrepreneur support, and education & skills development. Yet, these efforts have not been tracked by data providers nor rewarded by the investment community.
The global refugee crisis is accelerating which means scalable solutions are required to successfully integrate refugees into the economy. Recognizing this, hundreds of global companies have taken action by hiring refugees, supporting refugee entrepreneurs, and training and educating refugees. From the groves of the Jordan Valley, to the streets of Beirut, to the dusty markets of Zaatari refugee camp, Syrian refugee children as young as seven years old are working. They often work for long hours and little pay, sometimes in dangerous or exploitative conditions. Financial necessity is at the core of almost all cases of child labor, though other factors also come into play. The majority of working children are boys and the immediate and longer-term effects of work on these children can be severe, seriously limiting their prospects for the future. Refugees are often overlooked and underutilized.
Recognizing this, companies have taken action through hiring, entrepreneur support, and education & skills development. Yet, these efforts have not been tracked by data providers nor rewarded by the investment community.

“We are witnessing a changed reality in that forced displacement nowadays is not only vastly more widespread but is simply no longer a short-term and temporary phenomenon.” — Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees

What happens once refugees arrive in their host countries? Due to a variety of underlying factors such as growing sectarian conflict, increased income inequality, and climate change, refugee displacement rates have sharply increased in the last ten years and are projected to rise at an even higher rate this decade. The UNHCR reports that at the end of 2020, approximately 82 million people were forcibly displaced of which 26 million are refugees. Moreover, 77% of the world’s refugee population remain in “situations of long-term displacement”. Please visit our website *linkinbio to join our mission!

We'd like to be able to see such joy on kids' and teens' faces anywhere they may live. A simple human right, to enjoy simple sustenance, to rejoice in life. It's particularly gratifying to be able to deliver some support and fellowship to young people fleeing from unimaginable hardships, as we plan to do with our first session in June 2022. Each year, tens of thousands of refugees flee their war-torn countries and communities and enter the United States. More than 40% are children, many of whom have experienced profound loss and survived devastating events. Despite the extreme adversity that they face, these children and their families demonstrate profound strength and resilience in their survival strategies, coping mechanisms, and abilities to adapt within what are often completely unfamiliar environments.
